Trichology is a branch of dermatology which studies both hair and scalp disorders. At TrichOOrganics we look at the relationship between your health and your hair condition.

There are many reasons to consult a trichologist including excessive hair loss, hair breakage, a patch of hair loss, excessive facial hair for a woman, loss of eyebrows or eyelashes, hair thinning, patches of scale, and burning or itching of the scalp.

Below there is a sample of the many conditions that bring people to the trichologist:

Alopecia is the term used for hair loss in general. The most important thing to remember with any hair loss, hair shedding and scalp disorder is proper Diagnosis. Hair loss can relate to many factors including hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, genetics, physiological and psychological stress. Androgenetic alopecia refers to male and female pattern hair loss and relates to Age, inheritance and/or the presence of Testosterone.

Dandruff pityriasis simplex Capitis is a common condition where the scalp may be covered with loose white or yellow flakes which may or may not itch. Dandruff can be controlled by the use of the correct shampoo and can benefit from scalp treatments.

Seborrhoeic eczema

This is characterised by inflammation and yellow waxy scales adhered to the scalp. There is often intense pruritus (itching) which can cause the sufferer to scratch causing the scalp to weep and bleed. Seborrhoeic Eczema can also affect the eyebrows, forehead and nasal folds. It is more common in men than women. The condition can be controlled and can benefit greatly from treatments. Elimination of certain culprit foods can potentially help this condition.

Pityriasis Amiantacea

This condition can occur alone or be a complication of another scalp condition, it is characterised by thick White/silvery crusting which causes clumps of hair to adhere to the scalp. The scale may seem to be growing along the hair shaft and be imbricated like roof tiles. It is important not to pull dry scale away from the scalp as it could potentially cause damage and permanent hair loss. The scalp is often moist, red and sore underneath the crusty scale. Pityriasis Amiantacea requires professional treatment to control it.

Treatments include:

This is where a scalp treatment cream is applied to the scalp, conditioner is applied to the hair and steam is used for 10-20 minutes , the moist heat helps moisturise the hair shaft and also softens crust or scalp scale allowing it to be gently washed off. The steam treatment can be finished off with a cooling moisturiser or anti-inflammatory cream or gel.

Electrotherapy and Massage

High frequency may be used to treat scalp conditions such as alopecia areata, Male/Female pattern and diffuse hair loss/telogen effluvium.

Infra Red

Infra red or radiant heat may be used on the scalp to help tissue relaxation, increase heat dissipation, lower blood pressure, increase blood flow to the scalp and help to increase circulation and respiration and therefor may help hair growth.

Ultra violet

Ultra violet rays can be used to help treat scalp conditions such as Psoriasis, Alopecia areata and telogen effluvium. Ultra Violet may benefit anaemia patients and is anti-septic.

Head massage

Gerard has a practitioners diploma in Head massage.

Initial Consultation

Your initial visit to the private trichology clinic at TrichOOrganics will last up to one hour. During the visit Gerard will take an holistic approach asking many questions and taking various factors into consideration including your medical history, medications taken, allergies, diet, lifestyle, family history of hair loss, hair care routines and will also conduct a thorough hair and scalp examination. Gerard understands how traumatic hair and scalp problems can be and how they can have a severe affect on your well-being and overall health and confidence and will take time to talk through your fears and concerns. In a lot of cases a proper diagnosis can bring a sense of relief and control back.

Gerard may refer a patient to their General Practitioner for blood work in order to investigate the reasons for hair and scalp problems, excessive hair loss for example, can be caused by vitamin deficiencies, low iron/ferritin, thyroid, sex hormone or blood sugar levels. The hair can be a good barometer of health as it is the second most prolific multiplying cell in the body.

Consultations at the clinic are €85 and treatments start from €35
